Why should you see a consultant hip surgeon?
You may want to consider seeing a hip surgery specialist if conservative treatments such as medication, physiotherapy, and lifestyle modifications haven’t worked. Another reason would be in the event your condition is significantly impacting your life.
Other signs you need surgery could include:
- persistent pain
- reduced mobility
- difficulty performing everyday tasks
- poor quality of life
- joint damage shown on scans.
“We strive to ensure all our patients receive the very best care from our wealth of experience and expertise.”
Kenan Dehne, Practice Plus Group consultant orthopaedic surgeon
How to choose the best hip specialist near you
If you live in the UK and need hip surgery, you’re in luck. Boasting a range of orthopaedic consultants, it isn’t hard to find the best hip surgeon for you. However, that isn’t to say you shouldn’t do your research beforehand.
Resources such as The National Joint Registry make finding and choosing the best hip replacement surgeons a much more straightforward task.
Get treated for a range of hip conditions
Not sure whether your hip problem requires surgery? Why not take our hip surgery quiz? It won’t be able to diagnose and treat your condition but answering just a few questions will give you an idea of whether you’d benefit from seeing a specialist.
Whether your hip joint is the issue or you’re struggling with referred pain, the hip consultants at Practice Plus Group will be able to help.
Hip treatment options
At Practice Plus Group, we’re proud to be able to offer a wide range of different treatments for hip pain. The list below shows which procedures and surgeries are available:
Please be aware that the above treatments may not be available at all Practice Plus Group hospital locations.
Hip surgery Q&A with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Kenan Dehne
How it works
If you think you need hip surgery, you have a few options. Patients wishing to have their treatment via the NHS will need to get a referral from their GP to access an initial consultation with an orthopaedic specialist. Those paying for their own healthcare via self-pay or insurance, do not need a GP referral.
During your initial appointment, the consultant will ask about your medical history and may carry out some physical tests. These may involve x-rays, blood tests, and even MRI scans. The latter will likely need to be performed on a different date.
Your initial consultation provides an opportunity for you to ask questions before your hip surgery, so it’s a good idea to do a little preparation beforehand.
The patient journey
Once your initial consultation is over, it’s time for the next stage in your journey as a Practice Plus Group patient. If surgery was agreed as the best course of action for you, we’ll be in touch within the next few days. This is to book you in for your operation at a time that suits you.
Hip specialist referrals
A GP referral to a hip specialist is typically only necessary for patients seeking healthcare via the NHS. If this is the case for you, your GP should be able to provide insight as to the right specialist to suit you.
Patients wishing to pay for their treatment often don’t need to self-refer.
How to pay
There are two ways to pay for hip surgery at Practice Plus Group:
- Self-pay private healthcare – this can be done in a one-off lump sum payment or via a finance plan
- Private health insurance – if you already have an existing policy.
If you don’t wish to pay for your healthcare, hip treatment is available via the NHS. You should be aware that choosing this option is likely to mean much longer waiting times for consultation and surgery.
Prices
At Practice Plus Group, the price of hip replacement surgery is lower than our main competitors. The table below illustrates this difference:
Private healthcare provider | Consultation fee | Price of hip replacement surgery | Total cost |
---|---|---|---|
Practice Plus Group | £95 | £11,899 | £11,994 |
Nuffield Health | from £150 | £14,920 | from £15,070 |
Spire Healthcare | unknown | £14,750 | from £14,750 |
If you don’t wish to pay for your treatment in a single lump sum, we do offer plans for financing your hip replacement surgery.

An orthopaedic surgeon or consultant typically specialise in hip treatments and procedures.
A hip specialist is often referred to as an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hips and knees.
A hip consultant specialises in diagnosing, treating, and managing hip pain.
While it’s impossible to give one answer to this question, a varied answer is actually better. That’s because it’s not a case of finding the best hip replacement consultant, it’s about finding the best hip replacement consultant for you and your needs. Research is crucial to uncovering the best options for you.
You should seek medical advice if you’re experiencing:
– persistent pain
– reduced mobility
– difficulty performing everyday tasks
– poor quality of life
– joint damage shown on scans.
Your initial consultation for hip treatment at Practice Plus Group will consist of your consultant carrying out a series of physical tests. These may include x-rays or blood tests. He or she will likely ask you questions about your own medical history, as well as your family’s. The initial appointment is also your opportunity to learn more about your treatment. – are having difficulty performing everyday tasks
– have hip joint damage shown on scans or x-rays.
Your consultant will also need to ensure you’re eligible for surgery before recommending it as a course of action.
This depends on where and how you want to see a hip consultant.
