Also called microdiscectomy or lumbar decompression or discectomy surgery, a posterior excision of a disc prolapse is a surgical procedure to relieve pressure on a spinal nerve. It is performed under general anaesthesia where the surgeon accesses the spine from the back. During the procedure, the spinal specialist removes a small portion of bone (or ligament) and extracts only the herniated disc material.
Lumbar discectomy surgery may be recommended if a prolapsed disc is pressing on a spinal nerve and causing symptoms such as leg pain, numbness, tingling or weakness. The aim of the procedure is to relieve pressure on the affected nerve, reduce symptoms and help improve movement and everyday activities.
Lumbar discectomy surgery is performed from the back of the spine, with the patient lying face down. The surgeon makes a small incision in the lower back and carefully moves the surrounding tissues to access the affected area. The part of the disc causing pressure on the nerve is then removed to help relieve symptoms. Your specialist will explain what to expect before your procedure and provide guidance on your recovery and aftercare.
