Spirometry test
A spirometry test is a simple breathing assessment that measures how well your lungs are working. It helps us understand how much air you can breathe in and out, and how quickly you can exhale.
At Practice Plus Group, spirometry testing is available through our private GP service, giving you fast access to investigation and support if you’re experiencing breathing symptoms or ongoing respiratory concerns.
Why might you need a spirometry test?
Your private GP may recommend a spirometry test if you have symptoms such as:
- Shortness of breath
- A persistent cough
- Wheezing
- Tightness in the chest
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Ongoing or worsening asthma symptoms
It can also be used to help diagnose or monitor conditions such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
What happens during the test?
The spirometry test is quick, straightforward, and usually takes around 15–30 minutes.
You’ll be asked to breathe into a small device called a spirometer. You will take a deep breath in, then exhale as forcefully and for as long as you can into the mouthpiece. This may be repeated a few times to ensure accurate results.
In some cases, you may be given an inhaler during the test and asked to repeat the process. This helps us understand how your lungs respond to treatment.
Is the spirometry test safe?
Yes. Spirometry is a safe and non-invasive test. You may feel slightly light-headed or tired briefly after blowing out forcefully, but this usually passes quickly.
Your clinician will guide you throughout the test to ensure you are comfortable.
What happens after the test?
Once your results are available, your private GP will review them with you and explain what they mean in plain language. Depending on the outcome, you may be offered treatment, an inhaler, lifestyle advice, or referral to a specialist if needed.
At Practice Plus Group, our private GP service ensures you get fast access to diagnostic testing and clear next steps, so you’re not left waiting for answers about your breathing health.
