Celebrating the impact of radiographers with Sharad and Jennifer

Happy World Radiography Day!

Every year on 8th November, we celebrate World Radiography Day, commemorating Wilhelm Roentgen’s discovery of x-rays in 1895. This day shines the spotlight on the critical role radiographers play in healthcare, from diagnostic imaging to radiation therapy, and their contribution to improving patient care.

On this World Radiography Day, we spoke with Sharad Daniel, MRI Reporting Radiographer, and Jennifer Hill, Lead MRI Radiographer, at Practice Plus Group MSK and Diagnostics, Buckinghamshire. They shared their experiences and insights into the fascinating world of radiography.

Sharad Daniel: 31 years of excellence in radiography

Sharad shares: “I’ve worked in radiography for 31 years, both in India and the UK. My first role in the UK was as a Mobile MRI Radiographer, where I worked across the West Midlands at diverse locations, including large venues like football stadiums and sporting sites.

Over the past 15 years with Practice Plus Group, I have significantly enhanced my radiography skills and gained invaluable experience. I’ve taken on roles such as Radiation Protection Supervisor, Infection Control Lead, and mentor to over 10 junior radiographers, many of whom have progressed to become MRI specialists. Recently, I supported a physicist who now performs MRI scanning in addition to x-ray”.

Jennifer Hill: Why radiography is key to healthcare

Jennifer comments: “Radiography is a key diagnostic tool in determining the course of treatment for many patients. It is often one of the first or second tests a patient undergoes as part of their diagnosis. At High Wycombe, we see around 28 patients per day, and it’s fulfilling to know that once a scan is complete, the patient can continue with their treatment as appropriate, hopefully improving their condition.

Radiography is a great career! There are so many opportunities for development in various specialties. For example, radiographers now routinely administer intravenous injections and can become practitioners in reporting and other diagnostic procedures, helping to ease the strain on radiologists. It’s an exciting career pathway with numerous directions for growth”.
