Biography

Mr David Rew qualified in Medicine and Surgery in 1981 at King’s College Hospital in South London. He trained in General Surgery in London and Wessex, particularly in Southampton from 1989 to 1994, during which he also began working intermittently at the Royal South Hants Hospital. From 1994 to 1999, Mr Rew was a Senior Lecturer in General Surgery at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, then until 2008 shared leadership of the last general surgical firm at the RSH pending its move to the Princess Anne Hospital site.

In 1999, he became a full-time NHS Consultant General Surgeon in Southampton, specialising in breast and endocrine surgeries, performing around 5000 breast operations, 1000 thyroid operations, and numerous other procedures. He also served in the military from 1975 to 2018, with deployments in the Gulf and Afghanistan, and were awarded the QVRM in 2015.

Since 2009 Mr Rew has made major contributions to the modernisation of digital health information systems at University Hospital Southampton,

Retiring from full-time NHS surgery in 2022 and from endocrine surgery in 2023, he continued sessional work at Royal South Hants Hospital, performing over 300 operations since 2022.

Mr Rew joined the Practice Plus Group Hospital, Southampton consultant panel in 2022.

Research and publications

Mr Rew was Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (2003-2009) and is currently involved in the NHS digital transformation programme. He is still working on his international academic publishing.

Memberships and fellowships

Mr Rew has served on executive boards of surgical associations and since 2009 has been the Subject Chair for Medicine on the SCOPUS Advisory Board.

He has been a Visiting Professor at Southampton Solent University since 2017 and retains an honorary Visiting Academic Role and interests in Teaching, Research and Development at University Hospital Southampton.
