  • your ability to undergo surgery.

Types of hernia surgery available

If you’re seeking private hernia repair surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Birmingham, the following types are available:

Keyhole surgery

Also called laparoscopic surgery, the keyhole technique sees a surgeon use an instrument called a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light). The laparoscope is passed through the abdominal wall via small incisions which allow the surgeon to use various instruments to repair the hernia.

Open hernia repair

During open hernia repair surgery, your hernia surgeon will make an incision over your hernia. They will then push the protruding tissue back through the muscle. This area of weakened muscle will have mesh either glued or stapled to it before the wound is closed with stitches.

Birmingham hernia surgery waiting times

Alongside cost, waiting times are one of the most important elements patients factor into their decision to choose private healthcare. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the stats.

Currently, the stated aim for the maximum NHS waiting time for non-urgent consultant-led treatments is 18 weeks. However, as is common knowledge, this isn’t always possible due to recent global pandemics and increasingly higher patient demand.

For example, the average waiting time for general surgery at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is currently 33 weeks (16 weeks for a consultation, a further 17 weeks for treatment).2

The current waiting time for hernia surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital Birmingham is just 4-6 weeks following your initial consultation.

Your initial consultation

Your outpatient appointment provides an opportunity for you to meet your consultant. He or she will carry out a physical assessment (if needed) and will ask questions about your general health and family medical history. If you have any questions about hernias or your specific condition, feel free to ask away!

Preparing for your hernia surgery

Your hernia repair surgery with us doesn’t start and end at the reception desk. We’re here to guide you every step of the way. From when you receive your treatment plan, to making travel arrangements for the big day, to what you should wear, our preparing for surgery guide provides all the information you need.

When you do return home, you will need to take it easy for a while. You will likely have been issued with painkillers and given important information about wound care.
