What is a tendon repair procedure?

Tendon repair surgery is a procedure to fix torn or ruptured tendons. These are the tough, fibrous tissues connecting muscles to bones. During the procedure, the specialist makes an incision to locate the damaged ends of the tendons. These are then stitched together and, in some cases, reattached to surrounding tissues. This allows the joint to regain normal movement and strength.

Why is it performed?

Surgery is usually recommended when the tendon is badly torn or when non-surgical treatments (such as physiotherapy or splinting) have been unsuccessful. Tendon repair is most commonly performed in the hands and wrists, shoulder, and ankles.

What the procedure involves

Tendon repair surgery is performed to repair a damaged or torn tendon and help restore movement and strength. Your surgeon will explain what to expect before your operation and provide guidance on your recovery and rehabilitation after surgery.
