What are menstrual disorders?

The term ‘menstrual disorder’ is used to describe any medical condition that disrupts a normal menstrual cycle. This includes variations in:

  • cycle frequency
  • cycle duration
  • blood flow
  • associated physical and emotional symptoms that interfere with daily life.

A “”normal”” cycle typically lasts between 21 to 35 days, with bleeding lasting 2 to 7 days. When cycles fall outside this range or present with debilitating symptoms, they are classified as menstrual disorders.

How are menstrual disorders treated?

Treatment for menstrual disorders depends on the specific issue. However, the most common treatments include:

  • pain medication
  • hormonal birth control (to regulate cycles)
  • medication to reduce heavy bleeding.

If the issues are structural, these may require minimally invasive surgery or a hysterectomy.
