What is a marsupialisation of cysts procedure?

Marsupialisation of cysts is a surgical technique used to treat recurrent cysts. Instead of removing the cyst, the specialist cuts a slit into it, drains the fluid, and stitches the edges of the open flap to the surrounding skin. This is designed to create a permanent, tiny ‘pouch’ that allows the new cavity to drain continuously.

Why is it performed?

The main aim of the procedure is to relieve pressure, pain, and swelling while preventing the cyst from reforming. It is performed under local or general anaesthesia.

What the procedure involves

Marsupialisation is a minor surgical procedure used to treat certain types of cysts by allowing them to drain and heal. Your specialist will explain what to expect before your procedure and provide advice on your recovery and aftercare.
