What is a total nail removal procedure?

Sometimes called ‘Total Nail Avulsion’, total nail removal is a minor procedure where an entire toenail ‘plate’ and its underlying root matrix are completely removed. It is performed under local anaesthesia and treats severe ingrown nails, chronic fungal infections, and nail deformities that haven’t responded to other treatment.

Why is it performed?

This surgery is carried out when the entire nail is severely damaged, thickened, or infected.

What the procedure involves

The specialist injects local anaesthetic into the base of the toe, then applies a tourniquet to restrict bleeding. The nail is then carefully lifted and detached from the nail bed.
