Gastroscopy procedure

If you’re experiencing ongoing heartburn, indigestion, stomach pain or difficulty swallowing, a gastroscopy can help identify the cause of your symptoms. Our experienced specialists use this minimally invasive procedure to examine your upper digestive system and provide expert care for NHS, self-pay and private medical insurance patients.

What is a gastroscopy?

Also known as an upper endoscopy, a gastroscopy is a diagnostic procedure where a doctor passes a long, flexible tube with a tiny camera attached through your mouth and down into your throat. It is used to examine the lining of your oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine.

Why is it performed?

It is used to investigate, diagnose, or treat symptoms and conditions in the upper digestive tract. A gastroscopy may be recommended if you experience:

  • unexplained weight loss or difficulty swallowing
  • persistent indigestion, heartburn, or nausea
  • unexplained iron deficiency or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • suspected stomach ulcers, gastritis, or cancer.

What the procedure involves

A gastroscopy involves using a small, flexible camera to look inside the upper part of your digestive system. The procedure is carried out by a specialist who will explain what to expect beforehand and answer any questions you may have. Your care team will provide information about how to prepare, what happens on the day and what support is available throughout your appointment.
