What is septoplasty?
A septoplasty is a surgical procedure used to straighten a deviated nasal septum; the wall of cartilage and bone separating your nostrils. It’s a common procedure the that aims to relieve nasal blockages, improve airflow, and allow you to breathe more easily.
Having a deviated septum is very common and while more-often-than-not causes no issues, in some cases, it can make one nasal passage smaller than the other. A septoplasty is often recommended to treat:
- difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
- chronic sinus infections
- persistent headaches
- facial pain
- recurring nosebleeds
- snoring or noisy breathing during sleep.
What the procedure involves
The surgery is typically performed by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist under local or general anaesthesia. The specialist makes an incision inside the nose, ensuring there are no visible external scars. He or she will then trim, reposition, or replace the crooked pieces of cartilage and bone to properly center the wall. The procedure typically takes between 30 to 90 minutes, and most people are able to return home on the same day.
