Nerve conduction study

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or unexplained pain, a nerve conduction study can help assess how well your nerves are working and support diagnosis. Our experienced specialists provide expert care for NHS, self-pay and private medical insurance patients, helping you understand your symptoms and next steps.

What is a nerve conduction study?

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is a diagnostic test that measures how fast and how strongly electrical signals travel through your nerves. By placing electrode patches on your skin, doctors can stimulate your nerves with mild electrical pulses and record how well the signals are transmitted.

Why is it performed?

Doctors use a nerve conduction study to evaluate the health of your peripheral nerves (i.e. the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord). The test helps pinpoint the presence, location, and severity of nerve damage or muscle disorders. Among the common conditions that can be diagnosed following a nerve conduction study are:

  • nerve injuries or compression
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • peripheral neuropathy.

What the procedure involves

A nerve conduction study is a test that measures how signals travel along your nerves. Your specialist will explain what to expect during your appointment and guide you through the process to help you feel comfortable.
