A coronectomy is a dental procedure that involves removing the visible top part (the crown) of a wisdom tooth while intentionally leaving the roots behind. This technique is typically used on impacted lower wisdom teeth to prevent permanent nerve damage.
The lower wisdom teeth have roots that often sit extremely close to the nerve that supplies sensation to your lower lip, chin, and tongue. Extracting this tooth entirely runs the risk of stretching or bruising this nerve. This can lead to permanent numbness. A coronectomy dramatically reduces this risk by avoiding the nerves intertwined with the root.
A coronectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes the crown of a tooth while leaving the roots in place when appropriate. Your specialist will explain what to expect before your procedure and provide guidance on your aftercare and recovery.
