Bostin! Crackin!

These are just a couple of words a local might use to describe our orthopaedic consultants in Birmingham. But why? What exactly makes them so good? Join us as we seek to answer the question.

Private orthopaedic surgery at a glance

  • Waiting time: 4-6 weeks
  • Cost: treatment dependent
  • Ways to pay: self-pay, payment plans, insured
  • Hospital stay: same-day or in-patient
  • Procedure time: treatment dependent

Why choose a private orthopaedic consultant in Birmingham?

From shorter waiting times to transparent, honest treatment pricing, let’s take a look at the reasons you should choose a private consultant in Birmingham for orthopaedic treatment.

Faster access and reduced waiting times

One of (if not the) main reasons to see a private hip consultant is the treatment waiting time.
And it’s all well and good saying that but let’s delve a little deeper. If you wanted treatment at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham, you’d currently be facing a wait of 27 weeks.1 If you were happy to have your treatment a little further afield, the current waiting time at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is 29 weeks.2

On the other hand, if you’re exploring the private healthcare route, with Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group, you’ll be able to see a private orthopaedic consultant just 1-2 weeks after submitting your initial booking enquiry. Should you need surgery, this will take place 4-6 weeks after your consultation.

Personalised consultant-led care

One of the ways in which private consultants make a difference during treatment is with the continuity of care. With Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group, you have the opportunity to choose the consultant you want to see for your initial consultation. If surgery is needed, the same consultant will carry out your orthopaedic procedure.

Transparent pricing and finance options

At Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group, we strongly believe in transparent pricing and making private healthcare accessible. That’s why, if you’re a private patient, you won’t pay extra for fluffier pillows or a comfy pair of slippers. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. Any extra charges typically come in the form of MRI scans that are often needed to reach a diagnosis. If this is true in your case, your consultant will discuss the need at length.

Why choose Practice Plus Group for orthopaedic surgery?

If you’re still umming and erring (we get it, it’s a big decision!), here are some reasons why you should choose to have your orthopaedic treatment with Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group.

Consultant-led orthopaedic expertise in Birmingham

You’ll get high-quality medical treatment and care tailored to your specific needs, and our clinical teams will have you back on your feet in no time.

Faster access with Wellsoon treatment options

Wellsoon means shorter waiting times, so you can have your initial consultation within a week, and surgery between 4-6 weeks later.

Affordable and accessible surgery

With Wellsoon there are no hidden costs – we don’t believe in them. What we do believe is honest, transparent pricing and making private surgery accessible. So, aside from being able to pay in one lump sum, you’ll also be able to access private orthopaedic surgery via payment plans.

Costs and payment options for orthopaedic surgery

It’s time to talk money. In the sections below, we look at the cost of private orthopaedic treatment in Birmingham, and the different ways you can access it privately.

Using private health insurance

One way you can access your orthopaedic treatment is via private medical insurance. To do this, you’ll need to make sure your existing policy covers the specific treatment you need before you can proceed. Your insurer will give you a list of pre-approved orthopaedic consultants from which you’ll need to choose the one you want to carry out your treatment. This is a big decision, so be sure to take your time and do your research.

Payment plans and self-pay options

If you have the financial means, you can pay for your treatment in a one-off lump sum. And while this option isn’t for everyone, there is another way of accessing private orthopaedic surgery: payment plans. With Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group, you can spread the cost of your orthopaedic surgery over 12 months at 0% APR or, for more long-term options, from 24-60 months at 14.9% APR.

This means you can spread the cost of your treatment and avoid paying a one-off lump sum.

Your treatment journey: from consultation to recovery

So, just what happens at a surgery consultation? And what can I expect from my recovery and aftercare? This section delves a little deeper into the ins and outs of the orthopaedic treatment process.

The initial consultation and diagnostic phase

During the consultation, the specialist will look to diagnose your issue and devise a treatment plan. This may involve physio, pain management or even surgical procedures. Video consultations are available with some healthcare providers.

With Wellsoon from Practice Plus Group, consultations cost £95. These typically last for around an hour and include assessments such as blood tests and x-rays if necessary. The consultant may also ask about your family medical history to get a better idea of your issue and how private medical treatment can help.

Sometimes, further tests are needed to reach a diagnosis. These are typically in the form of MRI scans which do incur further costs. Your consultant will explain the need for these with you, as well as what they hope to find.

The surgical procedure

This will depend entirely on the type of surgery you’re having. For example, hip or knee replacement surgery can take between 1-3 hours to complete, while carpal tunnel release surgery is typically done in about half an hour.

Your consultant will be able to advise on how long your specific treatment will take and what to expect from the procedure.

Post-operative rehabilitation and follow-up

After having your orthopaedic surgery, if you’ve had general anaesthetic, you’ll be under close observation as you come around.

Once you’re fully awake and your team is satisfied that you’re stable, you’ll be transferred to a private room. Here, you’ll continue your recovery with the help of your nursing team.

Depending on your initial recovery and the type of surgery you had, you may be discharged from the hospital on the same day. If not, don’t worry; there’s no extra cost for an overnight stay with us.

Before leaving the hospital, you’ll receive instructions for post-operative at-home care. This will include wound care, pain management, and the things you should and shouldn’t do. If needed, follow-up appointments will be scheduled with your orthopaedic surgeon to monitor your recovery progress and address any concerns.

Once you’re back home, it’s physio time! This will be an essential part of your recovery. A dedicated physiotherapist will work closely with you to regain strength, mobility, and flexibility in your hip joint.

It’s important to gradually increase your activity level and even after you’ve fully recovered, it’s important to attend regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon.
