While you may not think it, if you need an MRI scan in Plymouth there are several options to explore. Join us as we take a closer look at why you might need an MRI, how much it costs to have one privately, and how long you may have to wait for one.

What is an MRI scan and why might you need one?
Stripping it right back, let’s see what an MRI scan actually is. An MRI scan provides detailed imagery of different parts of the body. These include soft tissues, the brain, spine, nervous system, joints, and internal organs.
But who might be a suitable candidate for an MRI scan? Well, the following may be recommended:
- a patient with an ongoing condition that requires monitoring
- a patient with unexplained pain or symptoms.
- a doctor needing more detailed information about a patient’s specific condition that X-rays and CT scans can’t provide.
How MRI scans work – a quick explanation
Without wanting to sound like a Physics teacher, an MRI scan works by creating a strong magnetic field that focuses the atoms within a specific body part (the one being scanned!). The MRI machine then releases radio waves designed to ‘activate’ these atoms (basically push them around). As these atoms return to their original alignment, (at different speeds) they release signals that MRI technology, in all its brilliance, is able to translate into detailed imagery!
MRI vs CT or x-ray – what’s the difference?
The main difference between a CT scan and an MRI is the former uses X-rays, while an MRI uses strong magnetic fields to create images.
CT scans are often used in emergency situations (when people have broken bones, for example) as they produce faster results. MRI scans provide more accurate imagery, so they’re used to diagnose conditions associated with bones, internal organs, and joints.

If you’re an NHS patient, you may face a much longer wait. The stated aim of the NHS is to be able to offer patients an appointment up to 18 weeks after they join the waiting list. Depending on consultant availability and location however, this isn’t always possible and some patients face waits of over a year.
Private MRI: how soon can I get one?
Good news! At Practice Plus Group Hospital, Plymouth, you’ll typically be able to have your MRI scan as soon as possible after being referred for one by your consultant.
What to expect before, during, and after your MRI scan
So, you’re all booked in for your MRI scan and the day has rolled around. Try to stay as calm and relaxed as possible as this will help you stay physically still while the scan is in progress.
Depending on what you’re having scanned, the entire MRI experience should take around an hour to complete.
How to prepare for your MRI scan
If an MRI scan is required, you’ll be taken through the safety questionnaire there and then by your consultant. This is to ensure you’re physically and mentally prepared to have an MRI scan. If there’s anything you need to do before you can have a scan, your consultant will discuss this with you in detail.
What to wear for your MRI scan – clothing and metal
On the day of your scan, try not to wear clothes that contain metal parts (i.e. zips, buttons, jewellery etc).
It’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and remember to remove jewellery.
What happens during the scan?
To start the MRI scan procedure, you’ll be asked to lie down on a bed that will then slowly and automatically slide into the MRI scanner. The radiographer will leave the room once you are in the scanner, but don’t worry, you’ll be able to contact them at any point during the procedure via an intercom.
If, at any point, you need to stop the scan, you’ll be given a buzzer to squeeze before you enter the machine. This will allow you to speak to the radiographer. The scanner is very noisy – this is due to the electrical current passing through the components of the machine. Don’t worry though, this is completely normal and you’ll be given earplugs and headphones to help dampen the noise.
Aftercare and when to expect results
For a small number of MRI scans, a contrast agent is used. In rare cases, patients may react negatively. Allergic reactions are typically mild and may include a rash, itching, dizziness, headaches, and fatigue.
The scans will be read by a radiologist and the results will go back to your referrer. This usually takes around three working days. Your referrer will discuss the results with you at your next appointment. If you are a self-pay patient you will also get a copy of the results.
