It is primarily used to explore the extent of injury and damage to muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments, but can also provide imaging of organs and bodily abnormalities. Why would I need an MRI scan?

MRI scanners provide detailed pictures of different parts of your body, and can be used to help diagnose two different types of problems: musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal.

Musculoskeletal
A musculoskeletal MRI scan will help explore damage to muscles, bones, soft tissues, joints and ligaments. It can be used to understand the root cause of an issue that’s causing you pain.

Non-musculoskeletal
Issues such as headaches, balance problems, memory issues and abdominal pain can also be explored using an MRI scanner.

It should be noted that a consultant will always use the learnings from MRI imaging in conjunction with your symptoms before arriving at a diagnosis.

MRI referrals

Getting an MRI scan is a straightforward process. Patients seeking a scan through the NHS will need a referral form, whereas those choosing private healthcare may be able to self-refer. The MRI referral form itself contains a patient’s symptoms and reasons for needing a scan. It is filled out by a referring clinician who submits the form to a consultant radiologist. The information is then used to help with the reporting of your images.

Can I get a private MRI scan without a referral?

What can you have instead of an MRI scan?

There are other imaging options (aside from an MRI scan) that can provide insight to the root cause of pain. X-rays will show details specifically related to bones, while CT and ultrasound scans will provide imaging of organs, bones and blood vessels. The most suitable type of image for you will depend on your symptoms and the decision of your consultant.
