How do I choose a good hip surgeon in Bristol?

Bristol boasts no shortage of high-quality consultant orthopaedic surgeons. But how to find them? With our help, choosing a hip replacement surgeon may actually be easier than you might think.

1. Understand your needs

Just like a job interview where you need to decide whether a company suits you as much as you suit it, if you’re looking for hip replacement in Bristol, you should figure out what you need from a specialist. Consultant availability, experience, and location are all important factors to consider when thinking about how a specialist suits your needs.

2. Check for qualifications and experience

This is hugely important. If you need a specific type of hip surgery, you need to know that your chosen surgeon is not only capable of carrying out the procedure, but has plenty of experience in doing so.

3. Look at patient reviews and testimonials

Another key component on the list is patient reviews. Check whether any past patients have had the procedure you need. And if so, have they recommended a particular surgeon?

The quotes below are both from patients who had their hip surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Emersons Green.

“I was lucky enough to have a hip replacement at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Emersons Green. My experience was very positive. The surgeon Mr. Dehne did an excellent job, now just a neat trouble free scar testament to his skilful intervention. All the staff were helpful and efficient, starting from the reception, through to the ward. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

4. Explore NHS vs private options

Practice Plus Group Hospital, Emersons Green admits NHS and private patients, so it’s worth researching the current NHS waiting times. This can be done at the NHS-run Emersons Green page on the My Planned Care website.1 Currently, the NHS waiting time for orthopaedic treatment is over five months for an initial consultation, followed by around a three month wait for surgery.

For those seeking private hip surgery at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Emersons Green, the wait for a consultation is usually just two weeks. From there, patients will have their surgery within just 4-6 weeks.

5. Schedule a consultation and ask questions

“There’s no such thing as a stupid question” someone once said. And it’s absolutely true when it comes to hip surgery. After all, you aren’t an expert in the subject and you’re by no means expected to be one. So, get yourself booked in for a consultation and ask away! Our hip consultations cost just £95 and are a great opportunity to learn more about your procedure.

A good hip specialist will take the time to discuss your symptoms, explain your treatment options, and answer any questions you have before hip surgery. They should make you feel comfortable and confident in your care plan.

6. Check insurance and payment options

If you’ve got pre-existing health insurance, it’s a very good idea to check your policy. Have a look to see whether your treatment is covered or call your insurance provider to check for you.

Finance options are another great way of spreading the cost of your treatment. Practice Plus Group offers 12 month plans at 0% APR or 24-60 month options at 14.9% APR.

7. Consider rehabilitation and aftercare

Your healthcare journey doesn’t stop the moment you wake up from your hip surgery. You will need to allow plenty of time to recover before you can enjoy the benefits of the procedure. As a private patient at Practice Plus Group, your aftercare is all included in the price of your treatment.
