From Junior to Advanced Practitioner: Gina’s Career Advancement Journey as a Physiotherapist

Gina Koutsoflini shares some insights on her personal and professional growth from junior to senior physiotherapist at Practice Plus Group MSK, Buckinghamshire.

Gina Koutsoflini shares her journey of both personal and professional growth from a Junior to an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner at Practice Plus Group MSK, Buckinghamshire.

Starting as a Junior Physiotherapist

I joined Practice Plus Group in 2017 as a junior physiotherapist, bringing with me a foundation from my early career in Greece. The initial phase of my career was marked by extensive learning combined with hands-on experience. I received significant support from senior staff, lead physiotherapists, and our clinical director, who provided guidance and mentorship.

Advancing Skills and Career

Management was proactive when it came to helping me progress in my career, by funding industry standard courses like the Masqueraders course for serious spinal pathology, interpreting blood tests course as well as communication skill courses. These opportunities, together with access to in-service training and  joint clinics with spinal consultants, were crucial in my transition to an advanced practitioner role.

As I progressed from Junior to Senior Physiotherapist, I began leading spinal clinics, making independent decisions, and handling more complex cases. My role evolved to include advanced assessments, treatments, referrals for further investigations, and coordinating next steps with specialists.

Being an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner

In January 2024, I advanced to the role of Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner. In this role, I have a high degree of autonomy in the management of complex cases with multiple comorbidities, requiring both precision and confidence. I am looking forward to completing the musculoskeletal injection course.

My days are varied and fulfilling. I assess people with complex musculoskeletal (MSK) presentations and work on a treatment plan with them including further investigations when necessary, referral for physiotherapy and or referral to secondary care. I also manage administrative tasks, such as handling discharges and processing funding applications for joint replacements.
