What is neurosurgery?
Neurosurgery is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders affecting the entire nervous system. This includes the brain, spinal cord, spinal column, and peripheral nerves throughout the body. For procedures we provide, please see our spinal surgery and back pain page here.
Neurosurgery is performed to diagnose, treat, and manage conditions affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. It is typically recommended after conservative, non-surgical treatments (such as physical therapy or medication) fail to resolve symptoms, or in emergency situations, such as traumatic head injuries, aneurysms, and acute spinal cord compression.
Common reasons for undergoing neurosurgery include:
- neurological disorders: implanting devices like deep brain stimulators for Parkinson’s disease or performing procedures to treat severe epilepsy
- tumor removal: treating cancerous or benign growths in the brain or spinal column
- spinal conditions: relieving severe chronic pain from herniated discs, pinched nerves, or spinal stenosis
- trauma repair: treating head injuries, skull fractures, and spinal trauma
- vascular issues: repairing brain aneurysms and removing blood clots (haemorrhages).
