Having your treatment with us is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Find out how you can get referred and make the first steps to getting your life back.
Step 1 – Speak to your GP
If you and your GP have decided that you need surgery, always remember that you have the right to choose where to receive your treatment. Whether you are an NHS patient or a private self-pay patient, Practice Plus Group hospitals can accept referrals from any eligible patient* in need of the treatments we offer, regardless of where you live in the UK, even if you have an existing health condition as long as it’s safe for us to treat you. Visit our Patient Choice pages for more information on your right to choose your hospital.
Talk to your GP about the options, and do some research to help you make the right choice for your needs. Consider things like how long you will have to wait for treatment at each hospital, what their clinical outcomes and infection rates are like and how the Care Quality Commission has rated the service. Read our Access policies here.
If you have already been referred somewhere, but change your mind about where you’d like to go, you can still exercise your right to choose. Just tell your GP that you would like a new referral to another hospital.
*patients must meet Practice Plus Group eligibility criteria and be ordinarily resident in the UK. Eligibility is checked by your GP.
Step 2 – Referral received and accepted
Once we have received your GP’s referral we’ll be in touch with you to arrange your outpatient assessment.
We want to make sure you are fully informed and assessed before your treatment takes place, so the first stage of your treatment will be a visit to the hospital for an outpatient assessment. You’ll meet the consultant who will perform your treatment, and this is a great opportunity to ask any questions – you may even want to write these down ahead of your appointment.
We’ll complete any pre-treatment tests then and there, to save you making multiple trips, and talk you through what your treatment will involve. Your consultant and other members of the outpatient clinic team will explain any special preparations you may need to make before you come back.
Your surgical appointment is typically a few weeks after your outpatient assessment.
Step 3 – Treatment and recovery
Your surgery will be carried out and you will be given plenty of aftercare support to ensure you recover as quickly and effectively as possible. You’ll be able to call our helpline with any post-treatment concerns you may have, and we will communicate with your GP throughout the process, ensuring that they receive a comprehensive discharge notice and are ready to assist your recovery.
Hip replacement patient, Plymouth – I could not have been treated any better
I would like to thank everyone who looked after me with my hip replacement on 6/6/26 from Mr Miller who referred me, Mr Hosny the surgeon, all the nurses and other medical staff, the radiographer, the physiotherapist, domestics, receptionists, and anyone else I may have missed. From my first appointment to discharge, I could not have been treated any better. Having my surgery has given me my life back. Before, I couldn’t do much and certainly couldn’t go out and about. Now, I will be able to return to shopping, the clubs I belong to, and my football home matches, and most of all my coach trips to my football club’s away matches, which I really enjoy . Thank you all again from my heart.

Hip and knee replacement, Southampton – Changed my life twice over!
I had full hip replacement in 2024 and a full knee replacement a year later in 2025. Both were carried out by Dr Alistair Scott Parker and I cannot give enough praise to Dr Parker & the entire Team at Practice Plus Group, Southampton. Excellent care during and post op. Warm and caring Anaesthetists Geoff & Steve. I will always be so grateful to Dr Parker for changing my life twice over. Follow the expert’s advice and you will make a full recovery. Rehab is key & listen to your body.

General surgery, Shepton Mallet – First class experience all round!
Absolutely first class experience for me. I think the best way to write this review is to simply put in here exactly what I wrote on the card which I took in to the Shepton Mallet hospital on my final post-op visit (along with boxes of treats for their staff rest room) – this was as follows:-
“I want to say thank you to all the staff that I met in my recent stay in the hospital. Every single one of you was professional and efficient combined with pleasantness and humour. My operation has been a complete success and I am truly grateful for all your efforts. My sincerest thanks to you once again.”
I cannot praise the hospital highly enough as the staff and systems were simply superb – my thanks yet again to all there.

Knee replacement, Birmingham – The care was professional and reassuring
My mother recently underwent her second total knee replacement surgery at Practice Plus Group, both performed by Mr Dehne.
The care she received was professional and reassuring. Mr Dehne’s obvious expertise and clear communication put her at ease and the nursing staff, doctors and physios were all so kind and always willing to help.
She was a little unwell after the operation and had to stay an extra night. A special thank you to the night shift nurses Jill and Allison. Her progress was closely monitored and pain managed as well as possible. Nothing was too much trouble. We’re extremely grateful for the care received.
The experience with PPG and Mr Dehne has been very positive – from the warm welcome on reception (Jackie is fabulous) though to being wheeled out to the car to go home (thank you Jordan), we are grateful for the care and compassion shown throughout both surgeries and look forward to a much better quality of life that two new knees will bring.
