Plymouth hospital strengthens support for Armed Forces community

Practice Plus Group Hospital, Plymouth has reaffirmed its commitment to the Armed Forces community by launching a new Veterans programme, with events set to take place at regular intervals throughout the year. The first Veterans Coffee Afternoon brought veterans, staff and members of the local community together to share stories, build connections and support one another.

The hospital also announced Alabaré as its Charity of the Year. The charity supports homeless veterans on their journey to recovery and independence through accommodation, tailored programmes and specialist support.

Practice Plus Group Hospital, Plymouth, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, was officially accredited as Veteran Aware in June 2023 by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA). The accreditation recognises its commitment to ensuring that veterans, serving personnel and their families receive personalised, informed care that takes account of military experience and need.

Hospital Director Sarah Fell said: “Championing veteran care isn’t something we focus on for just one day – it’s something we are passionate about every day. With many veterans in our community and working within our hospital, it’s vital that we continue to build understanding and provide the right support.

“Creating opportunities like our coffee afternoons programme helps strengthen those connections and ensures veterans feel recognised and supported. We are also delighted to support the charity Alabaré this year. The work they do to support homeless veterans is incredible and we look forward to hosting events and initiatives at the hospital to raise as much money as we can to donate to their appeal through 2026.”

Staff across the hospital have contributed to its Veteran Aware accreditation, including volunteering as Armed Forces Service Champions. These are colleagues who undertake national training and are available to offer support or signposting where needed.

Private patients can book consultations directly with Wellsoon private healthcare from Practice Plus Group, while NHS patients can ask their GP for a referral.
