How to choose the best hip specialist in Southampton

When it comes to Southampton, it’s difficult not to think about the Titanic. After all, the ship departed from the city on its ill-fated voyage and it’s estimated that up to half of the passengers and crew onboard came from Southampton. But beyond the 1912 tragedy, Southampton has a diverse range of attractions and reasons to visit. One of which is our team of hip specialists. Between them, they enjoy years of experience and expertise in the field of hip surgery – but how do you find the best hip replacement surgeon for you? Let’s find out!

Experience

When it comes to choosing the hip surgeon for you, one of the key factors to consider is consultant experience. Your chosen surgeon should be capable and experienced in carrying out the specific procedure you need, so, in this instance, it’s important to look for surgeons who have completed specialist training with a focus on hip replacements. Experienced surgeons are more likely to have encountered a broad range of cases, which may increase their success rates.

Credentials

Research whether any past patients have had your procedure. Have they recommended a specific surgeon? Ask for statistics on a surgeon’s complication rates and ask how they would manage any situations that might arise. Look for surgeons who are members of specialist hip replacement surgery societies or registered with professional associations (e.g. the General Medical Council, British Orthopaedic Association, or the Royal College of Surgeons).

Reviews and testimonials

Reviews from past patients can be an extremely useful indicator of satisfaction levels towards the quality of care provided by a surgeon or hospital. You should focus on reviews that cover hip replacements; these will provide insight into the surgeon’s bedside manner, communication skills, and overall level of care.

How it works: from consultation to recovery

There’s no need to be concerned about your hip surgery. From your initial consultation to follow-up physio, we break down the journey below so you know what’s to come.

Your initial consultation

Your consultation will be booked in for a time and date that suits you. The actual consultation with the specialist lasts around 25-30 minutes but it’s a good idea to leave plenty of time in case of traffic or unexpected delays. At the end of the appointment, your consultant will have arrived at a diagnosis and treatment plan. During the consultation, your consultant will perform physical tests (e.g. x-rays, blood tests, swabs) if needed. You’ll also have a discussion about your issue, your general health, and your family medical history.

If you’re having your treatment privately, this consultation costs £95 and includes all diagnostic tests except MRI and CT scans.

Your hip surgery

Hip surgery typically takes between 1-2 hours. The procedure sees the replacement of worn or damaged sections of the hip with an artificial hip joint. The surgery will be carried out either under spinal sedation or general anaesthetic.

Your hip surgeon will make an incision on the side of your hip, remove the damaged ball and socket joint and replace it with an artificial one.

Aftercare and follow-up

After having your hip surgery, you’ll be under close observation as you come round from the anaesthetic.

After a period of close observation with one-to-one care in post-op recovery, you’ll be transferred to a private room. Here, you’ll continue your recovery with the help of your nursing team.

Depending on your initial recovery progress, you may be discharged from the hospital on the same day. If not, don’t worry; there’s no extra cost for an overnight stay with us.

Before leaving the hospital, you’ll receive instructions for post-operative at-home care. This will include wound care, pain management, and the things you should and shouldn’t do. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled with your orthopaedic surgeon to monitor your recovery progress and address any concerns.

Once you’re back home, it’s time to get serious about your physiotherapy as this is an essential part of your recovery. A dedicated physiotherapist will help you to regain strength, mobility, and flexibility in your hip joint.

It’s important to gradually increase your activity level while avoiding high-impact exercises or activities that could put excessive strain on your new hip joint. So don’t go booking a skiing holiday or developing a sudden desire to play rugby!
