From prison nurse to regional lead: Emma’s inspiring career at Practice Plus Group

Emma’s eight-year journey at Practice Plus Group, from Band 5 nurse in a high-security prison to Regional Primary Care and Safeguarding Lead is a story of career growth and leadership.

Let’s take a look at Emma’s eight-year journey at Practice Plus Group, from Band 5 nurse in a high-security prison to Regional Primary Care and Safeguarding Lead, highlights career growth, leadership support, and prison healthcare impact.

Emma says:

I first began working at Practice Plus Group in early 2017, starting my journey as a registered band 5 nurse within a Primary Care team at a high secure male estate. From the second I was issued my belt and began interacting with patients I quickly knew this was an environment where I wanted to build a career.

Growing with support

Practice Plus Group has supported me to turn a job into a career  I love. From my role within Primary Care, I was supported to complete my training in cardiac rehabilitation and then my prescribing alongside — an area we knew was a need for patients but also allowed for my own personal development. This enabled me to move a step onwards and obtain my role as a senior nurse within the team.

Patient interaction is fundamental to the work we do, but through my supervision sessions I began to realise that staff development, coaching and teaching was an area that — although I had little experience in — I really enjoyed. This led to courses and coaching being offered, allowing me to explore this further.

Transitioning to a leader

After around five years within the male estate, and with Practice Plus Group strongly supporting and encouraging me, I was successful in obtaining the role of Clinical Lead in a female prison. This allowed me to stay within a working environment and company I loved, but with the chance to explore opportunities in other areas.

From interacting with other clinical leads across the region and having such an open senior leadership team — not only regionally in Yorkshire, but nationally across PPG — I quickly began getting involved in project work. Throughout this time, I was fortunate to receive coaching and advice from different leaders across the company. With these new experiences, contacts and guidance I was eventually able to explore ‘next steps’ — all while being comfortable that it was the right decision and that the support I needed would be offered along the way.

This led me to the role I am in today as Regional Primary Care and Safeguarding Lead across the Yorkshire/North East Region.

Supportive leadership and staff wellbeing

For me, one of the key areas where Practice Plus Group excels is the leadership qualities of the senior team which naturally filters to regional and site level. I feel now, as part of the regional team — and even before as a band 5 nurse — that I have always been able to call someone from the National Team. Whether that be a director, a governance lead, etc — I know I will get a response, my call will be answered, my email responded to, because I genuinely believe from the ‘shop floor’ to the ‘directors’ table’, we all truly follow our core values, and mean them.

The staff wellbeing agenda is another vital aspect which I think makes Practice Plus Group different. Speaking to friends working in other areas of healthcare they are blown away with the level of support offered to us from Practice Plus Group. From Trauma Risk Management (TRiM), Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA), wellbeing strategies, these aren’t just words on pages, they are seen, acted upon and make a huge difference to staff. Prisons are such a uniquely rewarding but incredibly challenging area to work in, one often overlooked and misunderstood by many. Caring for staff wellbeing is fundamental to allow us to give patients the best possible experience and I think we get it right.

Join our team

My career to date has been phenomenal within Practice Plus Group and I am still asked in every supervision, what next? What do you want to do? Where do you see yourself next year, in five years, etc? And I know it is not a tick box exercise, it is a genuine question — because the commitment to staff is engrained within Practice Plus Group’s culture.

If you’re looking for a fulfilling career where you can grow, make a difference, and be supported every step of the way, we’d love to hear from you. Unlock your best work life!Â
