John shares insights into what it is like to work in a prison as a physiotherapist
John, a dedicated physiotherapist, shares his unique experience working in a prison environment.
He reflects: “Is working as a physiotherapist in a secure environment different from an outpatient or community physiotherapy’s setting? Not significantly!
The principles of musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy remain consistent, however, a few unique aspects set prison work apart.
Unlike outpatient clinics, where patients arrive on their own, officers escort the patients to our healthcare department. I then escort them back to the waiting cells after the procedure.
Due to security protocols, a few parts of the physiotherapy toolkit, like TheraBands, are not accessible, but these challenges fuel my creativity. It makes this job more interesting by pushing me to up-skills and prescribe care that will work around these limitations.
Delivering care with the team
My team includes GPs, nurses, podiatrists, and administrators.
I spend my day triaging referrals, prioritising waiting lists, and consulting patients face to face.
My Musculoskeletal (MSK) caseload includes mostly ankle sprains, osteoarthritis, back pain, etc. I sometimes also come across some acute injuries sustained within the prison walls.
I put a lot of emphasis on empowering patients to become a part of their own rehabilitation: it works better and, I work closely with the gym staff to allow patients to self-manage their condition.
There is a higher percentage of chronic pain conditions in a secure environment; however it is an exciting place to work alongside GPs and specialist nurses. We constantly try to improve the care that we offer patients and reduce chronic pain incidents.
I find Practice Plus Group an innovative company. It’s exciting to work with the team here: it allows me to drive a positive change in prison healthcare . Despite the challenges, it is also a very rewarding environment to work in.
