Attia Anwar sits at desk

A day in the life of a Clinical Lead Nurse

Attia is Clinical Lead Nurse for NWL Out of Hours and Clinical Assessment Unit at Practice Plus Group.

I’m an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) with experience in primary and secondary care, and before taking this role with Practice Plus Group I had a well-rounded experience working in urgent care and GP practices in the NHS.

In this role, I can really enhance my leadership skills- both clinical and non-clinical- as well as my managerial skills, I can engage with other clinicians to lead by example, and inspire and motivate other clinicians. I’m thriving in this role and am really enjoying it.

The role brings forth many opportunities and I have had the chance to be involved in, such as rolling out new services, mobilising, monitoring and making improvements. I have also been involved in running some pilot studies to implement new, improved and efficient ways to provide high standards of care to our patients.

I work closely with the senior operational team as well as the admin team and we all work very well together. It’s like a family, everyone is very welcoming, supportive and friendly.

We communicate regularly and approach challenges as a team and you don’t feel isolated or alone. This is also underpinned by Practice Plus Group values. We all enjoy what we do while acknowledging the pressures of working in urgent care.

One advantage of working with Practice Plus Group who have so many contracts around the country is that we can all share best practice and learnings. We can see how another region has rolled out a service and learn from each other.

This is my first role in an independent provider and my NHS experience has helped. We live by the principles of the NHS, have the same value proposition as the NHS with added benefit of innovation. I have been really impressed at the organisation’s interest in everyone’s ideas to help us innovate for our patients.

I also find Practice Plus Group are very encouraging for career progression and development. Prior to starting here, I had begun an NHS leadership course, and I have been supported to complete it. I am proud to be part of and work for a leading independent provider to the NHS which aims to deliver excellence in care.
