Menopause is a natural phase of life for women, but it can bring a variety of symptoms that can have a big impact on day-to-day life: from hot flushes and night sweats to mood changes and sleep difficulties. Menopause Month is a reminder that support is available, and your GP can play a key role in helping you navigate this transition.

How a GP can support you
Private GP appointments offer a confidential space to discuss your experiences, ask questions, and receive personalised advice. Whether it’s exploring hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or general health concerns, your GP can provide guidance tailored to your needs.
Practical tips for everyday life
Simple lifestyle strategies can also make a noticeable difference:
Maintain a balanced diet and minimise alcohol, particularly if you struggle with hot flushes.
Stay physically active – try to do a mix of different exercises, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly, including some strengthening activities as we lose muscle mass and bone density as we age and strength training can help protect against this.
Manage stress and consider incorporating relaxing or mindful activities such as yoga, breathwork or meditation into your daily routine.
Try to build a consistent sleep routine
Combining these habits with professional advice can help you feel more in control of your health during menopause.
When to seek medical advice
While menopause is a normal process, certain symptoms should not be ignored. Persistent or severe fevers, unexpected vaginal bleeding, or ongoing genital discomfort should prompt a GP consultation to rule out other health issues. Early discussions with your GP can provide reassurance and ensure you receive the right support.
