What is a lower dental clearance procedure?

Lower dental clearance – also referred to as a full lower arch extraction – is the extraction and removal of all natural teeth in a person’s lower jaw. It is usually followed by fitting the patient with dentures, an overdenture, or dental implants.

Why is it performed?

It is usually performed on a patient who has severely decayed, abscessed, or weakened teeth – most commonly due to gum disease. The procedure aims to stop chronic pain and recurrent infections and provide a clean foundation for implants or dentures.

What the procedure involves

Lower dental clearance is a procedure to remove all remaining teeth in the lower jaw when this is the most appropriate treatment option. Your specialist will explain what to expect before your procedure and provide guidance on your recovery, aftercare and any follow-up treatment you may need.
