What is slipped disc surgery?

Also called a discectomy or microdiscectomy, slipped disc surgery is a procedure to remove the bulging or damaged portion of a spinal disc that is pressing on a nerve.

Why is it performed?

Slipped disc surgery is performed to relieve severe pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, legs, or arms. While most slipped discs heal on their own with rest, physiotherapy, and medication, surgery is usually recommended if:

  • conservative treatments and steroid injections prove unsuccessful
  • significant muscle weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking persists
  • there are signs of urgent nerve compression, such as loss of bladder or bowel control.

What the procedure involves

Slipped disc surgery is performed to relieve pressure on the affected nerve caused by a damaged spinal disc. Your surgeon will explain the procedure, what to expect on the day and how to prepare, as well as providing advice to support your recovery afterwards.
