CT scan – one body part

If you need a clearer understanding of what’s causing your symptoms, a CT scan can provide detailed images of a specific area of your body to help with diagnosis and treatment planning. At Practice Plus Group, our experienced teams provide CT scans for NHS, self-pay and private medical insurance patients, with expert care from referral through to results.

What is a CT scan?

A CT scan of one body part is a specialised, non-invasive imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to take highly detailed, cross-sectional images of a specific area of the body. The most commonly imaged body parts are the brain, chest, knee, and abdomen. A CT scan provides much clearer details of bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels than a standard X-ray.

Why is it performed?

A specialist may order one body part CT scans to pinpoint injuries, detect diseases (like tumors or infections), or monitor ongoing treatments. The scan targets a specific anatomical area to:

  • check for internal bleeding, stroke damage, or tumors
  • evaluate lung or heart diseases and blood clots (pulmonary embolism)
  • diagnose issues with internal organs, detect kidney stones, or identify bowel disorders
  • assess complex bone fractures or spinal column injuries.

What the procedure involves

A CT scan uses advanced imaging technology to create detailed pictures of a specific area of your body. The scan is carried out by a trained healthcare professional, who will guide you through what to expect and ensure you feel comfortable throughout your appointment. Your care team will provide any preparation information you need before your scan.
