What is a varicose vein scan?

A varicose vein scan, or Doppler scan, is a non-invasive ultrasound test used to assess the blood flow in your leg veins. It helps identify damaged vein valves, pinpoint the source of varicose veins, and determine the most suitable treatment options.

The scan is painless and does not involve radiation or needles. During the appointment, a specialist will use ultrasound imaging to examine the veins in your legs and assess how effectively blood is flowing back towards your heart.

The results of your Doppler scan can help diagnose venous insufficiency and support treatment planning for symptoms such as visible varicose veins, aching legs, swelling, heaviness, itching, or discomfort.

What does a varicose vein scan check?

It’s commonly used to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Swollen or painful legs
  • Suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Varicose veins
  • Poor circulation
  • Numbness or cold extremities

How does it work?

A handheld probe is placed on the skin with gel. The probe sends sound waves into the body and measures how they bounce back from moving blood cells. This allows the clinician to see both:

  • The structure of the vessel (like a standard ultrasound)
  • The speed and direction of blood flow (the Doppler effect)

Is it safe?

Yes. A varicose vein, or Doppler scan is perfectly safe, painless, and does not use radiation. You can return to normal activities straight after the test.
