What is a thumb joint replacement?

Also called basal joint arthroplasty, thumb joint replacement removes a damaged thumb joint and replaces it with an artificial implant. This implant is typically made of metal, plastic, or ceramic depending on the patient’s specific needs. The procedure treats severe arthritis at the base of the thumb with the goal of relieving pain and restoring hand mobility.

Why is it performed?

Thumb replacement surgery may be recommended if you have:

  • chronic, severe pain at the base of the thumb
  • a grinding sensation or stiffness
  • difficulty with daily tasks like opening jars or turning keys
  • reduced pinch and grip strength that does not improve with non-surgical treatments like splinting, physiotherapy, or steroid injections.

What the procedure involves

Thumb joint replacement involves replacing the damaged thumb joint with an artificial implant to improve movement and reduce pain. Your surgeon will explain what to expect before your operation and provide guidance on your recovery and rehabilitation after surgery.
