Multifocal toric lens
Toric lenses help to correct astigmatism at the time of surgery and can be combined with many other lens types.
Multifocal lenses are lenses that aim to correct vision for near, intermediate and distance. For patients interested in more spectacle independence and a greater range of vision than monofocals, multifocal IOLs may be suitable.
Over 90% of patients report being happy with multifocal toric lenses. They accept the risk of side effects in return for increased ability to see intermediate or near work with minimal use of glasses. These multifocal lenses tend to work best when inserted in both eyes.
However, patients should be aware of the following potential issues with this type of lens:
- Sharp vision at multiple distances has its trade-offs due to the splitting of light three ways. This can cause glare and halos.
- This lens isn’t suitable for patients who are more likely to find visual disturbances bothersome. Up to 20% of people find the glare and other phenomenon irritating either during night driving or other activities dependent on exact lens design.
- Some people also feel that the quality of vision obtained through a multifocal lens is not quite as clear as with a standard monofocal lens.
- Variations in intraocular lens calculation and measurement mean that some residual refractive error and glasses requirement may be necessary in certain cases.
- If complications occur during cataract surgery, it may not be possible to insert a multifocal lens.
- A toric lens may not fully correct the astigmatism and you may still need glasses for distance vision.
- If complications occur during cataract surgery, it may not be possible to insert a toric lens. The lens can rotate and a second operation may be needed to move the toric lens back into position for best vision. This also carries the risk of further surgery.
- Some patients may require further surgery to remove the toric lens and replace it with a standard lens.
- The alternatives to toric lenses for those with high astigmatism are glasses or contact lenses.
