Enhanced depth of field toric lens
Toric lenses help to correct astigmatism at the time of surgery and can be combined with many other lens types.
These lenses offer strong and at night. better contrast during the day good functional near vision, intermediate and distance vision, These lenses create one elongated focal point to enhance EDOFs are good options for patients who want to decrease but not eliminate the need for readers and are interested in seeing at multiple distances, such as for watching sports on TV. Some people prefer “micro mono vision” with usually the second eye being corrected to slight short sight, to help with reading. There are some potential issues with EDOF lenses, such as:
- If complications occur during cataract surgery, it may not be possible to insert an EDOF lens.
- Variations in intraocular lens calculation and measurement mean that some residual refractive error and glasses requirement may be necessary in certain cases.
In this type of cataract surgery, we surgically reduce or eliminate your astigmatism by either reshaping the cornea with a blade, or using an astigmatism-correcting lens implant (Toric
Lens) or both. With the eye set to see normally far away and the astigmatism corrected, most patients see very clearly far away without glasses to drive or watch TV but need reading glasses to see clearly at the computer and up close. There are some potential issues with Toric lenses:
- A Toric lens may not fully correct the astigmatism and you may still need glasses for distance.
- If complications occur during cataract surgery, it may not be possible to insert a Toric lens. The lens can rotate and a second operation may be needed to rotate the Toric lens back into position for best vision, with the additional risk of further surgery.
- Some patients may require further surgery to remove the Toric lens and replace it with a standard lens.
- The alternative options to using Toric lenses for those with high astigmatism are glasses or contact lenses.
