Patient story

Vanda puts sciatica pain in check with physio classes

Vanda’s sciatic pain was greatly affecting her daily life causing discomfort and limiting her range of movement. After visiting her GP, she was referred to Practice Plus Group MSK, Buckinghamshire, for Physiotherapy. Vanda saw a physio for a one-to-one session and it was suggested she needed to start some exercises to help her. Patients can do these at home via exercise videos created by our expert physio team, or they can choose to come for group classes led by one of the physiotherapists on site.

“Since the classes, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my sciatica pain…I feel they’ve made a real difference to my daily life.”

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back to the feet, is irritated or compressed. Sciatica has many causes including a herniated disc, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), or bone spurs. Sciatica is a symptom, not a condition itself, and it refers to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels along the sciatic nerve.

After an examination by a physio at Practice Plus Group MSK, Buckinghamshire, Vanda was advised to help her condition by doing specific physio exercises two to three times a week. She chose to come to our centre in High Wycombe to join our physio-led classes once a week and follow-up with the programme at home.

Vanda says: “I was referred to the centre by my doctor for six physio classes as I had sciatica pain in my lower back and I had a lot of pain going down my legs. Because of my sciatica pain I was struggling to get out of bed sometimes and unable to walk or shower. It was painful to bend down.

“I enjoy attending the group physio classes at the centre…there is a large gym and I exercise with others with similar conditions led by my physio”

“I enjoy attending the group physio classes at the centre as there’s more time to focus on the exercises. There is a large gym and I exercise with others with similar conditions led by my physio’.

“Since the classes I have noticed a significant improvement in my sciatica pain. The pain is no longer constant like it used to be and much more manageable. I try to keep up with the exercises at home too and I feel they have made a real difference to my daily life.”
