Dr Gary James Gutteridge studied Medicine between 1986 and 1992 at the University of Oxford. He began his first position in Anaesthesia at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1995 and completed his Certificate of Specialist Training in Anaesthesia in the Bristol deanery in December 2002. In addition to his training in anaesthesia, Dr Gutteridge has undertaken subspecialty training in Pain Medicine and is an Affiliate Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine within the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
He is the pain management lead at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Southampton, and also works part-time as a substantive consultant in Pain Medicine with the community-based chronic pain service at the Adelaide Health Centre, part of Solent NHS Trust.
Dr Gutteridge has been a student and a doctor continuously within the NHS since becoming a clinical medical student in 1989 at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. His core anaesthetic training took him to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals in Bristol, Yeovil District Hospital, and the Royal United Hospital in Bath. He has worked as a consultant in Anaesthesia in Bristol and Yeovil, the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. In addition to his duties at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Southampton, and with the chronic pain team based with Solent NHS Trust, he also holds an Honorary Consultant position at Southampton General Hospital.
Dr Gutteridge specialises in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine. He has a special interest in medication management and supporting Primary Care Services and GP’s with the setting up of supportive frameworks to help patients reduce their burden and the risks of long-term analgesic medication, especially opioids.
Research and publications
Dr Gutteridge is currently involved with the multi-centred, double-blind, random-controlled trial called ‘Radical’ which is examining the efficacy of performing radiofrequency ablation procedures to the facet joints, in patients with persistent low back pain.

Hobbies and interests
Dr Gutteridge is a proud, supportive and helpful father who enjoys spending time with his 4 children, the youngest of which having just turned 18. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to music and playing the piano. He is a keen gardener and enjoys getting out in the garden more on the weekends.
