Why being a psychologist in a secure environment is empowering

Tania, our National Head of Psychological Therapies, shares how her role in secure settings transforms lives, promotes change, and fosters growth through trauma-informed care.

Tania is a consultant clinical psychologist and the National Head of Psychological Therapies in our Health in Justice team. Her career journey is as inspiring as it is diverse. Trained in South Africa, Tania has over 20 years of experience in forensic mental health across secure units, rehabilitation, and community services in the UK. Joining Practice Plus Group six years ago, Tania’s focus on trauma-informed care has shaped psychological services in UK prisons.

The impact of psychological care in secure environments

For me, working in secure environments offers an incredible opportunity to make a real, lasting difference in people’s lives. Unlike many other areas of psychology, working in settings like prisons means supporting patients who are facing their own struggles—whether it’s trauma, addiction, or past behavioural issues. They’ve been marginalised, and sometimes forgotten. But with the right care and support, they have the potential for meaningful change.

The ability to guide someone towards understanding their emotions and behaviors and ultimately creating healthier coping mechanisms is a rewarding experience. It’s not always easy, but when you witness even the smallest step forward in a person’s journey, it feels incredibly powerful.

Transforming lives and challenging stigma

Working in a secure environment has also given me the chance to challenge societal stigma. Many of the individuals I work with are labeled by their past mistakes. But what I’ve learned over the years is that every person is capable of change. Being a psychologist here means advocating for that potential and helping them see themselves in a different light.

Through trauma-informed care, we understand the root causes of many behaviors, such as past abuse or untreated mental health conditions. Addressing these issues helps break cycles of violence and incarceration, offering the opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. It’s this holistic approach that makes our work so valuable.

Unmatched career growth

The challenges here are unique—no two cases are the same, and each person requires an individualised approach. This environment pushes me to constantly learn, adapt, and advance my skills.

What excites me about this work is that it’s never static. There’s always room for growth. The complexity of working in these settings means I’m continually learning new therapeutic methods and contributing to psychological practices.

Additionally, this role has given me the opportunity to lead and mentor others in the field. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see others grow in their practice and know that I’ve played a part in supporting them along their journey.
