Happy Allied Health Professionals Day!
Happy Allied Health Professionals Day!
This AHP Day, we celebrate Lawrence Carmel, whose quiet dedication and long-standing service have made a lasting impact on the lives of countless patients at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Shepton Mallet.
Lawrence has consistently delivered patient-centred care with empathy and expertise, helping patients regain mobility, rebuild confidence, and rediscover their strength. His work reflects a deep commitment to physiotherapy and a heartfelt connection to the people he serves.
Here is how Lawrence tells the story of his journey so far:
“I began my physiotherapy career in India in 1997, working in an orthopaedic and sports medicine unit focused on sports injuries. After a decade, I sought international experience and moved to the United Kingdom, starting as a volunteer physiotherapist in Scotland. Eventually, I found my place at Shepton Mallet, where I have been for more than 15 years.
My time here has been incredibly fulfilling. Every patient I have worked with has taught me something new- especially those facing complex challenges.
In 2016, I also took on the role of Student Coordinator for the University of the West of England. Guiding students through their academic and clinical placements has been a privilege. Watching them grow into confident professionals has added another layer of meaning to my work.
Most recently, I completed a Master’s degree in Sports Injuries- an achievement that has deepened my clinical expertise and directly supports the launch of our new private physiotherapy services starting this month at our centre.”
“There have been many memorable moments throughout my time here. Winning the Laing Buisson Award for falls prevention in 2014 stands out, as does the opportunity to demonstrate a live class on BBC Radio South West.
I will never forget a patient with advanced Parkinson’s disease and severe arthritis who had been confined to a wheelchair and believed she would never walk again. After months of dedicated preparation and rehabilitation, she regained her ability to walk following bilateral knee replacements. Witnessing her determination and recovery was one of the most profoundly rewarding experiences of my career.”
What keeps me here is the spirit of this place. Practice Plus Group Hospital, Shepton Mallet is a place where ideas are heard, teamwork is valued, and professional growth is encouraged. The collaborative culture and commitment to excellence make it a great place to work. After so many years, I can confidently say that Shepton Mallet is not just where I work- it is where I have grown and where I belong.
