Biography

Educational background

Mr McHale studied medicine at the University of Southampton graduating with honours in 2008. He undertook higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in southwest England from 2014-2020. During this time he studied for an MSc in musculoskeletal sciences at the University of Oxford and was awarded a distinction. Mr McHale passed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons exams in 2019. He has been on the specialist register for Trauma and Orthopaedics since 2020 and has subspecialist training in hip and knee surgery having undertaken a fellowship in New Zealand and Oxford.   

Previous hospital placements

Mr McHale previously worked as a consultant surgeon in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, UK, and Whakatane Hospital in New Zealand. 

Specialities

Mr McHale specialises in disorders of the hip and knee and offers total hip replacement for patients with painful arthritis of the hip joint. For patients with painful arthritis of the knee joint he offers partial or total knee replacement, depending on the extent of the arthritis. For selected patients he will offer realignment procedures around the knee. Mr McHale also treats non arthritic conditions of the knee such as ACL ruptures, injuries to the meniscus, or instability of the kneecap (patella).

Research

Mr McHale has published research on a range of aspects of orthopaedic surgery including prevention of blood clots after hip and knee replacement, and the treatment of infected total hip and knee replacements. 

Fellowships and memberships

Mr McHale is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the British Orthopaedic Association.
