Katie pharmacy technician

Passion meets career progression: Katie’s story as a pharmacy technician at Practice Plus Group

Discover Katie’s journey in pharmacy, from community roles to a rewarding career across service lines at Practice Plus Group.

Finding her niche role in pharmacy

Katie’s passion in pharmacy began early. At just 15 years old, she joined the community pharmacy team at Lloyds, where she quickly realised she had found her calling. Over the years, she gained experience in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and a GP practice. But moving into Practice Plus Group where she works across both Health in Justice (HIJ) and Integrated Urgent Care (IUC), was the best decision she ever made.

Seeking Stimulation and Challenges

For Katie, what drives her most in any role are challenges that push her to grow professionally

“Despite working with various companies and in a variety of settings, I have never felt as comfortable and happy as working with Practice Plus Group. Nearly four years ago, I started my career here and it is the best decision I have ever made,” Katie shares.

She initially applied for a pharmacy technician role in IUC, but when a part-time opportunity in prison healthcare became available, she was encouraged to share her valuable experience and work across both divisions.

Expanding her role

Speaking about her first remote role as Lead Pharmacy Technician in IUC, Katie says:, “I faced new challenges and had to learn many new procedures. But the constant support through team calls helped me gradually adapt to my responsibilities and a new way of working.”

She adds:, “Apart from handling medicine management queries and cycling actions, my role now involves more crossover tasks across primary care. I work on improving the Patient Group Directions (PGD)- mechanisms that now allow pharmacy technicians to supply or administer medicines without a prescription- for both IUC and Health in Justice. I collaborate with other pharmacy colleagues within my team, sharing expertise and supporting each other’s roles.”

“Apart from my core responsibilities, I conduct CD destructions and participate in quality assurance site visits. I have grown significantly as a pharmacy technician at Practice Plus Group, recently gaining the confidence to present and chair meetings- a major milestone for me”

A supportive work environment

“Practice Plus Group offers unparalleled support for career growth. I am grateful for the opportunities and support I have received and look forward to continuing my professional journey within the organisation,” Katie says.
