Together, Kerry, pharmacy manager, and Lisa, pharmacy technician, form a pharmacy powerhouse at HMP Doncaster!
Lisa joined Practice Plus Group in 2021 after spending 17 years working in the community. She says:
“The transition was hard to start with but the team was very supportive, and I quickly adjusted and embraced my new job.
Interacting with patients has allowed me to build rapport, becoming their voice. It’s a very satisfying working environment as you feel you are truly making a difference and helping people. You gain a lot of knowledge about their medical needs, and working alongside a multidisciplinary team has helped me to develop even further.”
Her day starts at 7am with rounds and dispensing medications, followed by managing and controlling drugs, stocking medications, and running reports on patients.
She adds, “The management team is very supportive, and people shouldn’t be put off the role because is in a prison. You are supported and there are amazing opportunities for development and progression. There are several pathways available and the pay is not bad at all! Doncaster is also easily accessible via the motorway.”
Sometimes all you need is a break, ready to start your next challenge. And that’s exactly what Kerry did!
Kerry first joined Practice Plus Group in 2020 as pharmacy technician, then took a break and re-joined later on as pharmacy manager.
She says, “There is a lot of room for progression here. The job is very interesting and you can really make a difference. Patients trust you and you can use your clinical skills more.
I have always loved working in the area of substance misuse as it’s where I feel I can help and make a difference in the lives of really vulnerable individuals. Working in a prison is not scary, it’s fulfilling and rewarding.”
Working in a prison setting offers the opportunity to challenge yourself and treat a variety of conditions, helping you grow and develop your skills.
