Marco La Malfa

Biography
Dr Marco La Malfa completed his medical education in Rome before moving to Antwerp, Belgium, where he trained in anaesthesia and intensive care at the University Hospital of Antwerp. After qualifying as a consultant anaesthetist, he developed a strong interest in anaesthesia for day surgery and loco-regional techniques.
In 2004, Dr La Malfa relocated to the UK, joining the Princess Alexandra NHS Trust in Harlow as a consultant anaesthetist. He then took part in the Department of Health’s ‘GSup’ contract, providing anaesthetics for NHS patients in Nuffield hospitals across Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and North Staffordshire. Following this, he became lead anaesthetist at Interhealth Canada, delivering anaesthesia for more than 6,000 orthopaedic procedures at the Kidderminster NHS Treatment Centre. He later joined UK-SH as clinical director of anaesthetics, overseeing five NHS treatment centres and introducing enhanced recovery pathways to help patients return home sooner after surgery.
Dr La Malfa joined Practice Plus Group in 2015 as clinical director of anaesthetics and became medical director at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Barlborough, in 2016. Under his leadership, day-case hip, knee, and shoulder replacements have become routine, improving recovery times and enhancing patient experience.
