Bariatric surgery procedure types
There are a few different types of weight loss surgery available. The right treatment for you will depend on your individual health needs. Mr Vasas, our expert weight loss surgeon, will be able to discuss your options during your £95 consultation, and recommend the right approach for you.
What is a gastric bypass?
The mini-gastric bypass (MGB) is a type of weight loss surgery that involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting the digestive tract to promote weight loss. This treatment results in patients feeling fuller after smaller meals.
Our surgeon creates a tubular stomach pouch and connects it to a loop of the small intestine. This rearrangement aims to restrict the amount of food that can be consumed and reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients.
It is considered less complex and typically takes less time to perform than the traditional gastric bypass. It can offer similar weight loss results and improvements in obesity-related health conditions.
What is gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy surgery, is designed to help people with obesity to lose weight by reducing the size of their stomach. This surgical procedure involves the removal of around 75-80% of the stomach, leaving behind a sleeve-shaped tube or pouch. The surgery restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold and alters the production of certain hormones related to hunger.
This results in patients feeling fuller after a smaller amount of food, as well as a decrease in appetite, leading to weight loss and better weight management.
Who will I see?
You’ll see Mr Peter Vasas, a GMC-registered bariatric surgeon, specialising in band, bypass and sleeve gastrectomy as well as revision surgery.
Mr Vasas completed an Ethicon-sponsored national bariatric fellowship programme in the UK and Belgium.
