Knee surgery FAQs
Knee replacement surgery reduces pain, restores mobility and gives you an improved range of movement.
We aim to carry out your surgery as soon as possible after you have been consented. This is normally around 4 weeks after your initial consultation. We’re really proud to have one of the shortest waiting times for knee replacement surgery in the country.
It’s best to stay active, this has been proven to give you a better recovery time. Some people will require pain relief to allow them to stay active. Removing hazards from your home (loose rugs and cables) to prevent falling, placing items within reach, and clearing space for walking with crutches, are all good ideas for preparation.
This depends on the type of knee operation. Most knee surgeries take between 1-3 hours.
Whilst you are in recovery, you will be given pain relief to make you comfortable. You will then be taken to the ward and you will be seen by the Physiotherapy team, who will get you walking around.
Exercises are extremely important to aid recovery. You should exercise daily in order to increase your range of movement and reduce the swelling of the knee. Walking is very important, as is strengthening your muscles and stretching the knee.
You should be able to resume outdoor activities within 12 weeks after your surgery. However, we recommend that you refrain from jogging and contact sports, instead we advise cycling or swimming.
Most people are able to drive six weeks after surgery. You should always check with your surgeon first.
For the majority of patients, their new knee will last between 10 and 20 years.
You will be given a telephone number to ring if you have any concerns whatsoever.

Practice Plus Group surgery celebrity stories
Dr Hilary Jones
Dr Hilary Jones, the well-known and trusted TV doctor, chose Practice Plus Group for his orthopaedic surgery. He talks of his complete confidence in his surgeon and the whole team who looked after him. From admission to discharge, he felt fully informed and reassured every step of the way and has made a fantastic recovery.
“My surgeon certainly put me at ease and reassured me, I had absolute trust in him and when I was admitted, I was visited by the nursing staff, the catering staff, the anaesthetist and the doctor. So I was completely happy with communication throughout – it was 100% so I knew exactly what was going on.”
Val Stones
Val Stones, beloved star of The Great British Bake Off, tells us her story: “I had such bad hip pain it was waking me in the night. I knew then that something had to be done. I chose Practice Plus Group because I have friends who had it done; they had come here. It was an excellent experience. I didn’t have to wait long. I was treated with such care and respect. The activities I can do now are incredible; now that I’m pain free. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t get up and smile because I’ve slept without pain. My family have said they’ve never seen me standing so tall and walking so straight. It’s been incredible.”

g. Your consultant is able to consent you for surgery during your initial consultation for any reason.
h. Your consultant does not require a second opinion.
i. Your specific circumstance does not require an MDT (multidisciplinary team) to take place before treatment can go ahead.
j. You do not have a circumstance, condition or disease which means it is not appropriate or safe to undertake treatment within the timeframe. This includes cancellations on the day.
k. You are not taking medication that you need to stop for longer than the timeframe.
l. Your outpatient appointment or treatment is not cancelled on the day due to consultant or hospital staff sickness.
m. The specific treatment, speciality or all hospital activity is not suspended for any reason including unforeseen circumstances.
