Shepton Mallet Hospital best in the West for knee surgery
29 July 2016
A national measurement which grades patients’ health improvement following an operation has rated Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre top in the area for knee replacements.
The results come from the latest quarterly report published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre which shows Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in England.
PROMs indicate how patients perceive their own health benefits following a number of surgical interventions, including hip and total knee replacements, based on responses to questionnaires before and after hip or knee surgery.

Knee and hip replacements are amongst the range of surgical procedures carried out at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre. Over the past year, 314 patients have had knee replacement surgery there with a further 435 having hip replacements.
Chester Barnes, hospital director at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, said: “This is a fantastic achievement of which we’re extremely proud. It reflects the importance we place on providing the very highest levels of care for patients. My congratulations go to my colleagues for providing such consistently high levels of care.”
The news comes hard on the heels of an announcement by Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group that a joint venture between Care UK and Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the preferred bidder to run the new Shepton Mallet health and wellbeing campus. The two organisations working together will be known as the Shepton Mallet Health Partnership.
