Inspectors praise Gillingham hospital
20 July 2021
Our Gillingham healthcare service has received a gold-standard award for its work supporting patients undergoing NHS investigations for worrying intestinal symptoms.
The team at Practice Plus Group Surgical Centre, Gillingham has successfully renewed its coveted Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation for endoscopy, which is a procedure that involves insertion of a thin flexible tube into the gut to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal problems.
JAG is an independent governing body that evaluates endoscopy services across the UK against stringent criteria for quality, safety, patient experience and training. Accreditation provides reassurance for patients that they are receiving an excellent standard of care.
The report found that the service was safe and well-led. JAG inspectors reported: “The environment and pathway is of a very high standard, offering patients a calm, comfortable and dignified experience.” The report went on to say: “They clearly put the patient at the centre of their care.”
Inspectors also praised the team for the procedures put in place to ensure that the service could continue operating safely for patients during the COVID pandemic, avoiding long delays.
The centre’s endoscopy lead Dr Mehtan Ahmed said: “We were delighted to read the inspectors’ comments. Patient care is at the heart of everything that we do here, and we take great pride in our commitment to ensuring that every patient’s experience is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Invasive investigations, such as endoscopies, can cause anxiety, but patients can be reassured that the service they receive here has surpassed rigorous national standards.”
“We often receive compliments from patients about how well they were treated, and how the process was so much easier and less stressful than they had anticipated. It was very rewarding to see those sentiments reflected in the inspectors’ comments.”
