Further investment to protect patients on hospital’s COVID-free pathway

Investment in a solid, external swab testing facility at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Emersons Green has further strengthened the COVID-secure pathway that allows the ongoing safe treatment of patients.
Patients will be booked in for a COVID-19 swab 72 hours prior to their surgery bookings, their first appointments for ear, nose and throat surgery or their physiotherapy appointments at the hospital.
Patients will follow the signs past reception to the side of the hospital, pulling up in the swab station.
Hospital director Chester Barnes explained: “Patients will remain in their car and one of the nurses will meet them to conduct the swab test. The nurse will then ask them to return straight home and isolate from that point until their appointment.
“Unfortunately, when they do come into hospital, patients will need to attend by themselves, unless they have pre-approval for support from a carer.”
Everyone entering the building will be asked to wear a face mask and encouraged to use hand sanitiser, and will have a temperature check.
Chester said: “We have found robust and creative ways to ensure the safety of our patients and our colleagues, including using video conferencing platforms to carry out some initial consultations, and telemedicine has proved very popular, as it not only reduces the need for people to travel but it also enables patients to have family members or friends with them during the initial conversation.
“Inside the centre everything possible has been done to ensure we remain COVID-secure, with pathways around the hospital including frequent social distancing reminders and plentiful supplies of hand sanitiser. In addition, our teams are all wearing appropriate PPE and they are keen to welcome patients – either virtually or here in the hospital.”
